Simplifying Wordpress category hell - Utilize The Evil Temptation of Overkill

Warning about category hellToday I received the question in my email:

Dear Owlbert,

How many articles do you need as a basis for your blog when you start it, are these in categories?

Signed,

Eager Blogger

Here’s the short answer:

a number between 1 and 3,243.

Here’s the longer answer

When cluelessness strikes - how to recover your forgotten admin password in Wordpress

CluelessnessMy mom is always fond of telling me, if anything is going to happen to anyone, it generally happens to my daughter.

My oh my, was she ever right.  :)

For the past few weeks, I’ve been in a frenzy of work, creating new wordpress blogs, tying up loose ends, and generally wreaking havoc and mayhem in my sanity.  Now, this by itself isn’t really news (the cutting edge of parallel processing has been my home ever since I was a sysadmin at AT&T), but it DOES lend itself to rather unique, ahem, opportunities for [Read more]

Learn from my hair-pulling mistake when your visitor traffic drops to 0!

DOH!Ever been seized with a brilliant idea for a blog theme update?  You spend hours tweaking it and getting it juuuust right, ask for comments and reviews from dozens of knowledgeable folk, exude blood, sweat and tears just thinking about getting it perfect….and then…..TURN IT ON!

Your community LOVES it!  Comments come in, fast and furious - what a magnificent change you have wrought!  It’s been transformed into a medium worthy of epic poetry!  Why, it will probably earn a position in the Bloggers Hall of Fame!

And away you waft, dizzy on the cloud of OHMIGOSH it worked, it really worked!  Utterly exhausted, you collapse for the night and sleep away until wee hours of next morning (you can’t change your sleeping habits all at once, you know).  While unbeknownst to you, something eeeeevil is happening….

Embracing the freight train of blogging frustration

Freight Train Blogging FrustrationYou know, I’ve heard of the phrase "hitting rock bottom" - it’s supposed to be that defining moment in your life when your eyes flash open and your very being is suffused with a desire to change your current agonizing misery (or at least run away to the sea in Nebraska where nobody knows your name).

‘course, that’s just too simple for me!  No indeed, hitting rock bottom still assumes you have the ability to vault yourself skywards (or at least, climb whimperingly) from of the pit of doom into which you dug yourself.    Sounds tough enough as it is, but what if you add being completely flattened by the Freight Train of Blogging Frustration into the mix - not only do you have to reinvent yourself, but you first have to piece together the variously-strewn parts of your formerly-sturdy blogging confidence and personal character as well.

Prevent the Mega Tunnel of Doom from devouring your blog visitors

Mega Tunnel of DoomHave you ever visited a blog that really intrigued you, so much to the point you were compelled to want to learn more?

It could be you want to enter a contest, download some podcasts, participate in a forum, you know, something that stoked your interest and excitement to a fever pitch.  Well, okay, perhaps not a fever pitch, it might be more like a a minor inflammation, but I think you know what I mean.

So!  You click on the "Sign up here!" and instead of being given access to your end goal…you get socked by another question you have to answer.  And another.

And another.

And….dare I say it?

Another.

To the point that your interest is doused so effectively, a solar flare on steroids couldn’t dry it out.  And you say, to heck with this! and surf away to someplace more friendly.

Has the above ever happened to you?  Hmmm?

And are you doing that to your visitors as well?
