Crush Internet Cockroaches by adding Recaptcha to your Wordpress login

If there’s one thing I despise in life, it’s the heathen scum that infest the Internet and tries to send spambots to my comments area.

But if there’s one thing I truly DETEST in life, it’s said heathen scum bonking at my Wordpress login page and making bogus registrations. They’re about as welcome and appetizing as a dish of cockroaches appearing at a formal dining event hosted by the International Society of Protocol and Etiquette Professionals, wouldn’t you agree?

‘Course you’d agree! You’re a smart online professional, right? Your time is valuable and your site is your own special abode on the Internet…you don’t want it to become a hangout for utter loser spam bots waiting to flood your thousands of posts with their own particular brand of ickyness.

Now, if you don’t allow people to register in the first place, you’re home free! But what about those situations in which you want to make certain registration is available?

Hmmmm?

When it comes to halting comments like "WOW COOL POST SEE MY SITE AT BLAHBLAHBLAH.COM" dead in their tracks, your options are many and varied! You can easily install the ReCaptcha plugin and turn it on; this will require people to type in the two displayed words before sending their comment into moderation/posting.

But until now, there wasn’t a similar option for Wordpress Login scripts!

I became very interested in this yesterday when I noticed several weird user signups on my blogs. They hailed from Russia and had no vowels in their names (a wee bit of a clue, eh?). So I started searching for spamproofing Wordpress logins, and came across

Easy to install (it just requires you to add your Public/Private Recaptcha keys), it presents to users screens that look the image up above. And Ben (the developer) is very prompt in answering questions! For example, once it’s installed, you can check it out by visiting

http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-login.php?action=register

(and not http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-login.php . That screen assumes you’ve already registered and are now simply logging in; Ben clarified that issue for me).

This is definitely a very useful plugin - I recommend you take advantage of it today if you choose to enable registrations on your blog. And you too can smash up the nasty little cockroaches that want to infest your blog.
