Easily add a signature image to your blog posts
NOTE! If you enjoy this post, please feel free to share and twitter it with the tinylink http://tinyurl.com/yucu6w . Thanks, I appreciate it!
It started last evening, it certainly did.
I had just returned from my beloved 2.4 mile circle walk with my kids. Refreshed from the early morning late afternoon air, I was about to shut down my computer and actually (I hope you’re sitting down for this one) rest, when I took one last look at my blog reader.
Well! Lorelle had posted an utterly magnificent article about Breaking Trust: How Not To Link to a Plagiarist that just drew me in and kept me reading and reading and reading. Within that article, I found another great resource about personalizing one’s blog by adding a signature image. WOW! What a super idea! I highly recommend reading it - the instructions are spelled out in plain simple language that makes it easy to implement. I’ve done that for my own blog already.
If you’re of a graphical bent, you can take advantage of all the free software fonts that are available online or even make your own! Some resources I’ve discovered are:
- Free Handwriting Fonts on the Web
- Simply the Best Handwriting Fonts on the Web
- Geek to Live - Make your own font
- Handwriting Font - Ask and ye shall receive
- MyFontTool for Tablet PC (by Microsoft)
Personally, I much prefer to download fonts to my PC, as they’re then available to me in Photoshop as well.
Installing a font is rather easy too! Here’s how.
DO THIS FIRST) Internalize that fonts are often denoted by the extension .TTF (as in, true type font).
You would download a particular font zip (say, the Star Wars font "StarJedi.zip"), and then unzip it to a temporary directory (say, Desktop/HOLD/fonts). (I use the "HOLD" naming construct to remind me this is a holding area for various to-do things).
Thus, create a holding directory for your fonts. Next:
Step 1.) Find a font you would like on the Internet and unzip it to your holding directory.
Use the resources from above. When you find one you would like to use, save the zip file (fonts are often zipped) and unzip it to your holding directory. Files you might see include:
- ttf files (those are the font files)
- jpgs/gifs (examples)
- txt files (description of the font)
- etc.
Step 2.) Open another Windows Explorer and browse to:
C:\Windows\Fonts
You’ll notice something very interesting when you click on the File tab - instead of "Open", you’ll see the option
Install New Font
like so.

Step 3.) Click on Install New Font and then browse to your holding directory.
Once you browse to the directory, you will be shown ONLY the font files in the window like so:

Step 4.) Select the fonts you want to install and cilck Install
Once you click "Install", the fonts will be installed to your computer. And when you start Microsoft Word or Photoshop or any application that reads in all your fonts, the new font you just installed should appear as an option.
And that’s how you install new fonts to your computer.
Once they’re installed, you can fire up Photoshop and create your own signature file and include it in your posts. I simply appended the following line in my single.php:
<img src="/images/signature.jpg" alt="Barbara Ling and Owlbert" height=132 width=296 />
after the content. If you’d like more detail, you can find it over at Lorelle’s instructions for adding your signature to Wordpress.
ThankYouVeryMuch!

Yes, and if you are not satisfied with the fonts and you want your personalized signature there is a wonderful service for that too. It is called Sign in Style (www.signinstyle.com). It helps you create your own designer signature or graphological signature by taking some inputs from your side. If you are not satisfied with your current signature then this is for you.
