Easy way to let people Twitter your blog posts - TinyURL plugin usable for tweets!

Automatically display the tinyURL you can use in Twitter for your blog posts!If you’ve been online for more than, hmmmm, 17 seconds or so, you’ve probably heard about Twitter - the nifty site that lets you communicate in chunks shorter than 140 characters.

If so, you’ve probably noticed that people use the TinyURL function to easily let their friends know about super neat blog posts, websites, etc.

After witnessing this sharing about 817 times, I said to myself:

Gee self, it would be quite spiffy if I could proactively give my readers the TinyURL itself…and then encourage them to tweet it on Twitter!

And thus was born my quest that resulted in every one of my blog posts being prefaced by:

NOTE! If you enjoy this post, please feel free to twitter it with the tinylink (fill in tinyURL here). Thanks, I appreciate it!

Here’s how I did it and how you can do it too.

Step 1 - Read up about the TinyLink plugin.

This brilliant developer realized he needed a similar solution…so he set about to build it himself.

Step 2 - Download and Install the TinyLink plugin.

It’s very simple to install - simply download, unzip, and then upload the file "tinylink.php" to your plugin directory.

Step 3 - Add the code to generate the TinyURL to your single.php file.

The default way to call the plugin is the snippet:

<?php TinyLink() ?>

But if you want to be more user friendly, you can include something like:

<ul>
<font size=-1><p><i>NOTE!</a> If you enjoy this post, please feel free to
<b>twitter it</b> with the tinylink <a target=_blank href=<?php TinyLink() ?>><?php TinyLink() ?></a>.  Thanks, I appreciate it!</i></font>
</ul>

I added the above right before the line:

 <?php the_content(’<p>Read the rest of this entry &raquo;</p>’);

Voila!  You are done!  And every time a single blog post of yours is displayed, the reader will have the TinyURL right at hand for tweetability.  How neat is that?

  2. Hi
    Thanks for your comment earlier. Just thought I would stop by and check out your site…

    Just took a peek at your site, love it. Myself am a Jack O’Neil fan. Gyver was a bit before my time, although am tempted to get some back episodes and check out the more youthful version.

    Am a serious StarGate nut, with all 10 Series Boxsets, so was gutted when he retired from the show early. Not the same without him that’s for sure. Now watching SG1 right from the start again, Series one episode one. Should be fun.

    Am RSS’s up so look forward to reading more of your posts.

    PS: Also doing a small Twitter logo, similar to the Flickr one.

    Thanks for swinging on by and visiting! Glad you like the site.

    I grew up with MacGyver - want to get my kids to appreciate it as well. They just don’t make TV shows the way they used to! And alas, ‘Legend’ never took off either.

    Best wishes,

    Barbara

  4. Every day I find another reason why I should move from TypePad to Wordpress.

    But… just can’t do it. Yet.

    Grrrrr.
