Google to reveal the Deep Invisible web

Invisible Web (YAAAAAAWN) (STRRRRRRETCH) Oh hi! Nice to see you back!

How was your weekend? Mine was a delightful utter bone-chilling agony as I had to teach my eldest quite a painful lesson in time management ("painful" because it involved me being el Tougho Mom and allowing the kid to experience the academic consequences). Sigh. If only one could transfer the common-sense wisdom gained in 4 decades of life to young children WITHOUT stress, things would be much easier. Then again, the kids would miss out on the knowledge-gaining experience that makes them far stronger than before.

Oh well, such are the joys of being a mom. But I digress.

….It was announced on Friday via the Google Webmaster Central Blog that the search engine has been experimenting with crawling through html forms in order to more fully index sites.

The search engine is filling out forms on a “small number of particularly useful sites” in order to bring forth the content that is populated by these forms and index these results….MORE….

This is actually quite important news for anyone who searches out information online. I’ve been teaching about the Invisible Web now since, gosh, 1998…..a whole decade! It’s a treasure trove of information about which 99% of other online users haven’t a clue.

Basically, the Invisible Web consists of dynamically-created content (ie, database backend queries) that isn’t static. To quote Berkeley,

…The "visible web" is what you can find using general web search engines. It’s also what you see in almost all subject directories. The "invisible web" is what you cannot retrieve ("see") using these types of tools….MORE….

Excellent resources for tackling the Invisible Web already exist. For example, consider Gary Price’s Resource Shelf.
