Happiness and power - perfect together

HappinessHave you ever wanted to be happy?

And have you ever wanted to have power?

And have you ever wondered….gee, what would it be like…to be and possess both?

Let me tell you, it’s pretty awesome…and actually not very difficult to achieve at all.

Would you believe that?

So many times, I see bloggers angst about how many readers they have…how many comments their posts generate…how many times their name is mentioned online…and if, by chance, the number starts to decrease, their overall mood and sense of business self-worth plummets faster than 34 chunks of concrete at the same time.

I really want to ask these people….WHY on earth is their happiness tied into something they cannot control?

Think about it.  You cannot tell your readers, thou shalt be so astonished by my greatness in writing, thou shalt spread the word with joy and harmony and dancing unicorns frolicking over meadows of verdent greenery!

Nor can you control Internet politics when it happens as well.

But!  You CAN set your own benchmarks that decree - your level of happiness is directly tied to your feelings of accomplishments.

Notice!  I said "Your feelings."  Not "your audience’s reactions."

YOUR FEELINGS.

You see, happiness while blogging has to come from within.  You can spend hours upon hours writing masterful works of literary art that evoke a simple, golly, that’s nice! reaction from your readers.  And if that’s what’s driving you on, the minute your readers offer something less than those few words….your self-confidence (and hence, happiness) nose-dives towards your big toe.

Instead of that, why not proclaim to yourself that you are aware you cannot change anyone…but you CAN choose how you value your own blogging and online efforts.  For when you make that mental switch, you take back the power your audience/readers/etc. might have had over you….and instead you own that power yourself.

I choose to give only a very very very VERY precious few people in my life power over me - that’s my husband (and he returns the favor).  Okay, and perhaps my karate senseis when they’re pushing me past my preconceived boundaries in sparring and self-defense.   But in both cases, I give permission - I do not allow anyone else to gain that kind of hold.

Don’t get me wrong. I love blogging, I love teaching, I love knowing that my writings make a positive impact on my readers.  But I am not dependent upon them for validation; instead, I derive that satisfaction on my own.

I encourage you to be the same - it will give your writing wings.  And that, of course, is a Very Good Thing indeed.

ThankYouVeryMuch!
