How to Recession-proof your blog and business today - Secrets revealed!

Recession Proof your blog and business todayMoney…it’s good.

I like money.  Don’t you?  Money enables me to keep my kids in slide rulers, my parakeets in Macaw-sized Nutriberries, my coffee maker always perking (although I will admit, it doesn’t do a darn for keeping kids sock pairs intact….).  But I digress. :)

Recession….it’s bad.

I don’t like a recession.  Recessions mean less money will be spent, which might mean less slide rulers can be bought or my parakeets will have to endure agony of plain old birdieSeed or my coffee maker will go silent (NOT A CHANCE OF THAT!) or ….you get what I mean, right?

Thus, should a recession occur, your business and/or blog ideally should be recession proof.  This was brought home to me with the force of a yak plunging off a cliff after following a herd of lemmings after I read the post "This blog entry is recession-proof".  Nestled among the author’s excellent ideas is this particular gem:

"I see it this way - as much as I would rather use other methods to get people’s attention, if people are going to talk about the recession day and night, I’m going to have an angle to tie that into what I do for a living."

What common-sense advice!  I do encourage you to visit her article and read and internalize what she says.  Lots of other people are writing about recession-proofing your blog/business too; do treat yourself by reading:

In addition, here are 3 suggestions of mine to help recession-proof your business and your blog.

1.)  Provide solutions to the fear.

When a recession hits, people get scared.   3 topics about which they panic might be:

  • Losing their job
  • If they lose their job and have to live on what their spouse makes, they panic about losing face/ego/self-pride
  • Decreasing their standard of living

How can you tie the above 3 factors into your particular business or niche?  Some ways might be to provide solutions on:

  • Setting the groundwork for job hunting (provide links to resources like EmploymentDigest.net and search for targeted career boards in the industry.  Such things are simple to find - just look for "industry jobs", ie, project management jobs or seo jobs.  You can take that even further by uncovering the scores of targeted communities for such industries, and writing about those as well.
  • Dealing with loss of face.  It happens even in non-asian communities as well!  Left untreated, feeling like you’ve lost face with your spouse or are degraded because said spouse is earning more is a very dangerous condition…one that can eat away at a happy relationship and turn it into a toxic nuclear waste.

The best way to cope with this is to encourage open communications within a relationship.  Some resources to which you can link and expound upon include:

  • Dealing with decreased standards of living.  While not the kiss of death, a surprising number of people simply cannot conceive of the idea of "Making More With Less."  Thus, you could write a series about being frugal within your industry or niche.  Some resources about which you can blog include:

Dollar Stretcher.  Tons of useful ways to make more of your money.  It even has its own frugal community as well.

Freecycle.  Contains hundreds of neighborhood lists in which people can request items or give them away.  I got many of my workout tapes and kids’ trampolines this way.

Totally Frugal.  A useful site for frugal tips…also with its own community.

You don’t have to stick with only generic frugal ideas, mind you - go to Google and search for "frugal office".  Several tips for saving money in the office can be found this way.  Or search for ‘freeware industry" - ie, freeware accounting.  You might see Google’s Freeware directory for Accounting returned.

Now, once you have written up a series of posts about the above topics, you’ll have the material to move to Step 2:

2.)  Write up a viral PDF entitled, Conquer the Future Recession In (Industry)

Why let all those magnificent postings you’ve created simply exist as a webpage on your blog?  Turn them into a nifty PDF file, brand it with your website URL, give it away and encourage others to share it.  I personally use Adobe Acrobat to distill my own PDFs, but you can use 2 free tools at:

PDFs are great because they can run on any platform; you don’t have to write one version for Mac and other for Windows or the third for the PDP-8.

3.)  Create Google News Alerts for your industry and the word "recession."

Visit Google Alerts and set up an alert for

  • industry recession

ie,

Make sure you set your selection criteria to "comprehensive" - that way, you’ll also get immediately notified with other blogs talk about this idea as well.   If you’re the first one with the news to your audience, you’ll stand out as the blog one follows to get the cutting edge.  I wrote a bit more about that here.

Remember your goal!  You want to be long-term, you want to be THE industry source to whom all turn when the recession hits.  Implement the above ideas plus your own creativity NOW…and you’ll be well on your way to recession-proofing your blog tomorrow.

ThankYouVeryMuch!
