Personal resume and “Hire Me” sites via your Wordpress or Blogger blog

Hire Me!When is a blog not a blog?

When it’s a Personal Resume/Hire Me site of course!

But!  Did you know…you can put the power of Wordpress or Blogger to work when creating your own resume and/or "Why Hire Me" personal domain?

It’s quite true and it can be extraordinarily effective to boot.  Here’s how!

First off, savvy recruiters and HR professionals know how to search on the word "resume" within title tags in Google:

ie

intitle:resume unix NJ (201|732|973) -submit  (this would narrow down results to resumes of folks who list "unix" and are based in the NJ area codes of 201, 732 and 973).

If you create a Page in Wordpress and name that "resume", that particular keyword will show up automatically in the title tags.  So right then and there, you boost your search engine visibility to the people who are hring.

Next, blogs allow you to easily create Pages where you can elaborate upon:

  • Why Hire Me?
  • Testimonials
  • Industry Resources

No longer do you have to manually hyperlink these webpages together; the blogging software will do it for you.

Perhaps the best reason for using a blog as your Resume/Why Hire Me template is it allows recruiters and HR professionals to see you in action (if you take advantage of the actually Post-writing ability).  Are you in the technical arenas?  If so, and if your blog focuses upon your industry, you can proactively demonstrate how you are knowledgeable about the field…and how you have your fingers on the industry pulse.

Are you instead in the communications/multimedia arenas?  Your writing style will aquaint readers from the very get-to, volumes about your abilities!  Instead of having to send in links to your portfolio/demo reels/YouTube videos, etc., you can have them all happily interwoven on your own blog.

Here are some examples of blogs that do double-duty as resume sites:

I always advocate that people should include, at the very least, the following Pages on their resume/Why Hire Me site:

  • Resume.  Okay, that’s kinda sorta  a "Duh."  :)
  • Why Hire Me.  Very important; remember, a resume is your first opportunity to "sell" yourself to an unknown recruiter/HR professional.  They know zero about you; your "Why Hire Me" page should excite and intrigue them to WANT to learn more.
  • Accomplishments.  Sure, that might be on your resume already…but why not draw attention from the get-go?
  • Testimonials.  If you’re a known quantity of greatness, you probably have scores of Happy Customer Testimonials.  Put them to work for you and list them where recruiters will find them.
  • Resources.  Also highly important!  It takes less than 5 minutes to uncover industry-related associations, organizations, user groups, etc.  Having a list of Resources shows the hiring manager that you are familiar with the social networking within your niche.
  • Contact Me.  Here you can have both your email address (ideally obfuscated) or use a spam-proof Contact Form.

These 6 Pages can easily assist you in creating your own personalized resume site…one that’s easy to maintain, update and find online.  If you know of someone looking for a new job, why not suggest they use a blog to help them get the word out?  They might be surprised at the benefits they’ll reap.

ThankYouVeryMuch!
