RANT - What Twitter REALLY is missing Part 8 - On Site Tech Support

8 days ago I wrote my first Twitter rant over here.

It’s time for my 8th Twitter rant. I’m confident you’ll agree that

No On Site Tech Support

is supremely baffling!

I mean, no matter how idjut-proof a web application is made, the world will simply build a better idjut! Consider those poor individuals who panic when the computer displays

Strike Any Key When Ready

and they (gasp!) CAN’T FIND THE ANY KEY!!!!

And what about tech-support horror stories like those from Computer Stupidities:

Customer: "I don’t use DOS. What would happen if I deleted that directory?"
Friend: "I heard about this thing called ‘Linux’."
- Me: "Oh, I use Linux."
- Friend: "What is it?"
- Me: "An operating system."
- Friend: "Like Firefox?"
A friend of mine was providing UNIX support for a Large Company (which shall remain nameless). One of his users called up one day to report a problem on a DOS machine. Apparently, her floppy drive was giving general failure error messages when writing new files.
- My friend dutifully trotted down there to look at the problem. He foolishly neglected to bring a replacement for the drive. When he arrived, he found that this woman had put a floppy in with the little plastic disk sleeve still in it. The head was trashed and the drive had to be replaced.
- About three months later, this same woman calls back with the same problem. This time my friend, now savvy to the wiles of this particular user, grabbed a replacement drive, then trotted on down to visit. When he got there, he found the drive with two 3.5" floppies shoved into it all the way. When he asked why (big mistake), she replied, "I was out of high density disks, so I figured I could just use two low density ones instead."
When I was studying programming, one of my classmates was having serious troubles with his program. When he asked me for help, I leaned over his screen and saw all of his code in comments. The reason: "Well, it compiles much faster that way."

and don’t forget these tech horror stories:

Customer: I’m trying to connect to the Internet with your CD, but it just doesn’t work. What am I doing wrong?
- Tech support: OK, you’ve got the CD in the CD drive, right?
- Customer: Yeah.
- Tech support : And what sort of computer are you using?
- Customer: Computer? Oh no, I haven’t got a computer. It’s in the CD player and all I get is weird noises. Listen….
- Tech support: Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!
Customer: Hi, good afternoon, this is Martha, I can’t print. Every time I try, it says ‘Can’t find printer’. I’ve even lifted the printer and placed it in front of the monitor, but the computer still says he can’t find it…

As you can see, no matter how easy a program is to use it….someone will require the creation of an Onsite Tech Support individual.
