Seize Your Perfect Domain Name via The Owlbert Way! Day 4 of 5

Fireworks!Welcome back!

Yesterday I had held your attention with an iron grip by asking you:

  • Are there any geographic/ethnic/niche/etc. aspects I should consider?"

when devising the perfect domain name for your blog or website.  And truly, Days 1-3 of this pithy yet nerve-tingling tutorial should have delivered to you the seeds of your latest domain name; just add major thunking and voila, a new domain is born!

But…what happens in the frighteningly real possibility that after:

  • you’ve done your research
  • you’ve done your meticulous data-gathering
  • you’ve spun more domain name ideas than a carnival whirly type ride

and then you discover….you’re still standing in the exact same place you were at the beginning of this exercise?

What then, gentle reader, I implore you - what then?

Not to fear! for I have my own Rules of Living Life!  And for this particular scenario, the following is called to mind:

"When you’ve exhausted all possibilities by thinking outside the box - turn that box upside down and give it a good shake.  You never know what will magically fall down that had been stuck hidden in the corner before."  — Barbara Ling (aka Owlbert)

I personally adore thinking outside the box.  My husband, bless his heart, finds this tendency of mine most, ahem, fascinating? as well, especially as I always implement it when cooking him breakfast.  I’ll start off like any other normal wife with your typical brekkie ingredients (eggs, chicken, salad, raspberries, etc.), become enthralled with "what if I did THAT to the meal entree HEE HEE HEE HEE HEEE EAT YOUR HEART OUT EMERIL LAGASSIE!" …and end up with a dish worthy of Food Network TV.  Then again, I program and build websites the same way

"designing by the seat of the pants" comes to mind

so I suppose after more than a decade of wedded bliss, it should be expected.  But I digress.

Thinking outside the box!

It is key, it is critical, it is the only skill only YOU can implement because nobody thinks in the exact same, creative fashion you do!

Let’s now apply this to crafting your ultimate blog domain name.  Perhaps your writing desire been set afire by a small child who discovered the forbidden dangers of playing with matches by the notion of blogging about, oh, I don’t know…. raising wolves.  And for the sake of this experiment, let’s assume that

  • wolfblogger.com

is NOT available (actually, at the time of this writing, it is).  What else can you do?

Hmmm.  How ’bout:

"Instead of focusing upon the subject, focus on the end result."

You’re blogging about wolves, right?  How about

  • TheWBlogger.com

That domain is available too.  And it’s rather memorable, right?  "Come back to see us at TheWBlogger.com!"

The W Blogger!

Mysterious indeed (people seeing it for the first time might say, hmmm, what the heck is the W blogger?  Let’s go check it out).  And you could build on that enigma by tailoring your first few posts about your passion…and interweaving the name with your love for wolves.  After all, you’re the Wolf Blogger, aka, TheWBlogger.com.

Let’s take another example.  Perhaps instead of wolves, you want to be one of the few souls on this planet who blog about making money online (I know, I know, I wish there would be more blogs about this subject too).

Remember my earlier point?

"Instead of focusing upon the subject, focus on the end result."

What’s the end result of making money online?

Ideally, you have wealth. You have money!  You have all the Breyer Model horses you can buy!  You have a different coffee flavoring for every day!, no, every hour!  OHMIGOSH, you have the undeniable luxury of telling your children, money DOESN’T grow on trees or Mommy or Daddy for that matter because when I was your age, ha ha!  we were sooooo poor that we couldn’t even afford the whole alphabet and had to use a number "1" for a capital "I" and a number 0 for a capital "O" and ….

Ooops, sorry, flashback there.  Hang on a sec while I get my 7th cup of morning coffee….

(tick tock tick tock tick tock)

Okay I’m back!   You would have wealth, you would have money.  ‘Course, the domain names

  • WealthBlogger.com
  • CashBlogger.com
  • MoneyBlogger.com

are already taken.  But ask yourself…what is blogging, REALLY?

C’mon, g’head, ask.  What IS blogging?

Well, it’s writing.  And with what do you normally write?

A pen, of course.

I’m thrilled to announce the following domain names:

  • WealthPen.com
  • PenOfWealth.com
  • PenOfMoney.com

are currently available (at the time of this writing).

But!  An evil spector now raises its terrifying head!  What if the mighty pen had fallen to the sword (oh no oh no!), and the brilliant domain names that resulted from your brainstorming were secured from you more tightly than wet rawhide drying in the noonday sun?

WHAT THEN??????

Well of course, first you’d stop typing in capital letters, as that’s considered shouting on the Internet.  Then, why, you’d simply ride on over to Thesaurus.com and search for (I hope you’re sitting down):

and you’d have the following words with which to play:

  • pencil, ink stick, marker, nib, quill, reed

among others.

Thinking Outside the BoxRemember!

"When you’ve exhausted all possibilities by thinking outside the box - turn that box upside down and give it a good shake.  You never know what will magically fall down that had been stuck in the corner before."  — Barbara Ling (aka Owlbert)

When you’ve exhausted the obvious, and skewered the hidden, and pummeled the invisible, and still are left standing in the dark…throw on the switch by turning your thinking upside down.  Focus on the end result…and then weave that concept backwards to help spark your mind and create the ultimate domain name for your precious idea.

You might be surprised with the gems that are born.

ThankYouVeryMuch!
