Seize Your Perfect Domain Name via The Owlbert Way! Day 5 of 5

Yesterday I had held your attention by showing you how to step outside the box when considering awesome domain names. It was an insightful lesson; one that showed you how to turn your thinking upside down.
So! During the past 4 days, we’ve discussed:
What else is left?
Well, there IS one thing you might want to consider….and it’s something that’s touted far and wide by some as incredibly important. That’s making certain your domain name contains keywords relevant to your topic.
Personally, I disagree.
Now now, kindly put away the AK-47s and samurai swords and small snarling poodles and let me explain why.
Long long ago, back when a radio button was something actually attached to a physical electronics device, I blogged about diet/fitness over at the Fab Fit Mom Journal (now retired and moved to BarbaraLing.com). Notice the domain name in question:
Fab Fit Mom
Sure, I suppose the words "fit" would come in handy for fitness queries, and "fab" is kinda sorta reminiscent of diet and weight loss (especially with the Lemon Freshened Borax!). But as you can probably imagine, laser-focused targeted keywords to my niche….they’re not.
But! Imagine my surprise when my site started popping up in the top 10 for some pretty general queries:
- free p90x
- p90x reviews
- turbo jam coupons
- magic legs
How did I achieve this? Well, I simply blogged about specific topics and made certain to implement your typical SEO goodies - blog titles, keyword densities, category names, outbound linking, etc.etc.etc. And that appeared to be quite enough!
Even more fascinating, the site has now dropped from the face of the planet as I no longer blog there. That demonstrated to me the importance of constant blog post creation….if all of a sudden you stop your writing, there’s a good chance your relevancy will drop. Perhaps it was just me, and the Evil Blogging Fairy of Stolen SEOness chose to focus solely on me. Whatever…these things happen, I choose not to angst over it
(why waste all that angst when instead I can angst about the 87 single socks that have taken over my laundry room and have no matches?)
I’m sure you agree. Right?
Anywhos! Back to the topic at hand.
There are some schools of thought that decree, thou must haveth lots of keywordeths in thy domaineth.
I’m not one of them. BUT! If that’s of great concern to you, consider reveling in the following writings (both pro and con):

So there you have it - a 5 day tutorial on how to choose the perfect domain name for your blog! You now have the tools at your fingertips….but they’re utterly useless unless you proactively choose to do something with them.
The ball is in your court! How will you choose to play?

Beginners blogging tips: Don’t focus solely on keywords in domains.
Intermediate and/or Advanced blogging tips: Concentrate instead on building your brand. One tweak of the Google Dance can send pages to the Titanic with regards to SERPs….but if you’re known via your brand instead of your SERPs position, you can easily ride out the storm.

Hey, the socks with no matches is such a familiar image to me! I hate them from all my heart.
Regarding domain names, I believe that it is far more important what you publish on that domain than the name. Names are what we make them.
