Owlbet's Blogging Glossary

As the days and months and year go by, new and unique terms are being concocted for blogging.  Below please enjoy my take on various blog definitions that I’ve gathered, more will be coming!

A

Above the fold - Area where content is seen before the user has to scroll.

Adsense - Google’s application that allow you to put their ads on your blogs.  When people click on them, you earn money.   Opposite of Adwords.  Bloggers generally use Adsense on their blogs.

Adwords - Google’s service that allow you to buy front page visibility on search results.  Opposite of Adsense.  Companies generally pay for Adwords to advertise their products.

Ajax - a scripting technique for silently loading new data from the server; dramatically reduces load time.  The updating of Google Maps displays, for example, uses Ajax.

A-list - top bloggers who greatly influence a particular community/niche.

Atom - a type of blog feed (like RSS).  Used by blogger.com among others.

Archive - collections of past posts that have been written.  Can be viewed by year, month and day.

Audioblogging - the act of creating a blog based upon sound (ie, audio). 

Autoblogging - method of automatically posting to a blog.  Generally used to generate content for search engine visibility.

B

Blog - web log.  

Blog Butterfly - A blog component that causes a great commotion in the blogosphere, includes compelling images, commentary, etc.

Blogcast - videos that are linked from a blog; a combination of a blog and a podcast.

Blog Carnival - Site that contains links to blog posts on individual topics.

Blogger - person who write a web log (blog).

Blog Hell - negative issues that affect a person’s blog.  Spamming, defamation, etc.

Blog Listeners - technique you can include in your blog post that allows readers to "hear your voice" when they read your words.  Personal writing style.

Blog Pride - act of keeping your blogging standards high.

Blogosphere - community of blogs.

Blogroll - list of favored blogs often put on a blogger’s sidebar.

Blogstipation - Inability to think on something about which to blog, writers block.

Blogvertising - Advertising on a blog.  Brings in income to the blogger.

Blurker - lurkers on blogs who read but do not comment or add their own input.

C

Captcha - Letter/image verification to prove a submitter is a real live human bean.  Supplemented now by ReCaptca.

Categories - how a blogger groups their posts.  Default is "Uncategorized".

Comments - reader input.  Often includes links back to commenter’s blog.

Creative Commons - license that provides for free usage of images/works.

D

Dashboard - Main screen of personal blog control (options, writing preferences, etc.)

Digg - social networking service to which blog posts are submitted.

Dooced - to lose one’s job because of blogging.

Entry - Blog post

F

Favicon - small image that denotes a blog or site in one’s browser.

Feed - brief collection of post snippets that can be read by feed browsers.  Syndication, RSS

Footer - bottom of a blog page.  Change the footer once, it updates all the pages.

FTP - file transfer protocol, how people can upload local files on their computer to their blog on a remote server.

Google - search engine that drives traffic.

H

Header - header of a blog page.  Change the header once, it updates all the pages.

Hyperlink - clickable reference to another page.

I

Icon - small images you can include in your blog.

Index - main home page of a blog.

J

Journal - Web log.

K

L

Link - clickable reference to another page.

M

<!–more–> - tag used to tell a blog where to put the MORE link.

Meme - collection of questions that get passed from blogger to blogger.

Moblog - mobile blog, posted/updated via mobile phone.

Momosphere - blogs by moms.

Monetize - the action of putting ads on your blog that results in personal income.

MyImager - free online tool to reduce jpg image sizes you include in your blog.

Netiquette - Internet and blog good behavior.

Permalink - static direct link to a blog post.

Plugins - tools you can add to your blog to give it increased functionality

Podcast - multimedia file that can be downloaded to a MP3/MP4/etc. audio device.

Post - entry in a blog

Problogger - professional blogger.

Q

R

RSS - really simple syndication.  Allows your blog content to be distributed online.

S

SEO - search engine optimization. Process of optimizing your site so it ranks in the top 10.

Social Boomarking - the act of promoting blogs/posts to social networking sites.

Spam - unsolicited commercial postings.

Spambot - automatic software robots that post spam on a blog

Splog - spam blog, created for the purposes of generating revenue.

Style/Style sheet - CSS that determines the look/feel of a site.

Syndication - Allows your blog content to be distributed online.

T

Tags - words used to ‘tag’ or indicate a post.

Tag Cloud - visual representation of popular tags on a blog

Template - collection of files that enable a specific look/feel to a blog.  

the_content - Wordpress variable that shows the whole content of a post on the main page.

the_excerpt - Wordpress variable that shows only an excerpt of a post on the main page.

Trackback - one blog post telling another blog post it referenced its link.

Vlog - video blog.

W

Webclip Bookmark Icon - favicons for the iPhone

Widgets - customizable tools that allow for easy arrangement of sidebar/footer/header blog components.

Wordpress - popular blogging software.
